track & field events and history

Track and Field - or athletics - was the base on which the modern Olympic Games and many other sporting events were centered around.

The sport has progressed a lot since it's early beginnings  with barefoot marathons and One-Hundred meter sprints that were run on a single breath according to Herculean legend. After the time of the ancient Olympics  athletics were not really revived until the Twelfth century and didn't make a full comeback until the 19th century in the United Kingdom.

Track and Field includes the sports of foot racing, vaulting, hurdling, jumping and throwing varied weights and objects. They are usually separated into 2 categories: track, the running and hurdling events; and field, the throwing, jumping, and vaulting events. “Meets” are usually held on an oval track that surrounds an infield for the field events; indoor meets may comprise all of the track events but few of the field events.

Track and field athletics in the USA dates from the 1860s. The Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America, the country's 1st national athletic group, held the 1st collegiate races in 1873, and in 1888 the Amateur Athletic Union (which governed the sport for nearly a century) held its 1st championships.

The Athletics Congress now controls the sport in the USA; the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) controls and sanctions international events. Track and field has been the cornerstone of the summer Olympic Games since their revival in 1896.

The long run   The most mortal sin of all as a runner is to be constantly looking at your watch.  Time doesn’t go any faster if you stare wide-eyed at it.  Although some seasoned runners may argue this point, it has yet to be proven.
