adventure racing multi sports

Formal adventure races started in the USA, in the early 1990s, they were big events, multi-day, multi-sport enterprises, involving teams of elite, sponsored athletes charging across 100's of miles of rough terrain around the world.

Adventure Racing as we know it today actually started in New Zealand.  The roots and spirit of Adventure Racing are embodied in the Kiwis of this rugged and small country.  Although most Americans 1st became aware of Adventure Racing because the Eco-Challenge's 1st race was in Salt Lake City, Utah, 1995.  the reality is that the Kiwis had already been "Adventure Racing" in multi-sport events for over Twenty years. The famed Raid Gauloises was started in 1991 by Gerard Fusil; the Eco-Challenge in 1995 by Mark Burnett -- who later founded the "Survivor" TV series.

Adventure racing is a combination of 2 or more disciplines, including navigation and orienteering, mountain biking, cross-country running, paddling and climbing and other related rope skills. An expedition event can cover 10 days or more, while sprint events can be completed in a matter of hours. Typically there is no dark period during races, regardless of their length - the choice of when and/or if to rest is left to the competitors.

Adventure Racing is best described as a continuous, multi-discipline, team event in the great outdoors.  You could call it a wilderness triathlon.  There are many variations but usually teams consist of Four members, often mixed-sex, but not always.  The team always stays together and the 1stteam to cross the finish line in the shortest period of time wins.  The biggest factor affecting the outcome  in any race is a team's ability to navigate an unmarked course solely by map and compass.  Successful teams have learned the best route to win is not necessarily a straight line.

The following are some general categories.

  • Expedition races- these races usually last Seven to Ten days and are multi-discipline events. Examples are Primal Quest and The Raid (an evolution of Raid Gauloises) .
  • Sprints and short courses- usually One to Three days. These are good for beginners. Examples of short courses are the Endorphine Fix and Teva Mountain Games Vail.

The actual race course is usually in remote wilderness areas far from big population centers.  The length of races vary, but typical races are Eight hours, Thirty- six hours, and multi-day races.    The distances are not for the light hearted.  In a typical Thirty-Six hour event teams often cover One hundred miles continuously throughout the night without any sleep.  A longer expedition style race can be Two hundred and fifty miles.  Successful teams will complete these longer distances in approximately Five to six days with very little sleep each day.
