BMX RACING

BICYCLE MOTOR CROSS

BMX is bike racing on a dirt track head-to-head against other BMX riders. Races are held based on skill and age levels. A race begins at the Starting Gate where all riders leave at the same time and race as fast as they can around the track over around banked corners, over jumps and then onto the finish line.

The winner is the rider who gets to the finish line 1st. Typically, a rider races Three motos or heats each race meet and more if you qualify for the main event final races. BMX is exciting and fun and the skills you pick up in BMX can be used in many other cycling sports.

BMX racing began in California, USA, in 1970 when Scot Breithaupt arranged a low key event on his motocross track, after local children copying his motocross jumping on their push bikes. He grouped the handful of children into skill classes and racing began. The following week over One-Hundred and fifty kids turned up.

In the 1990's the world embraced extreme sports. Suddenly every where you went people were testing the limits of adventure, physics, society and themselves. Extreme sports became recognized as legitimate pursuits and ESPN saw the potential. In 1995, ESPN hosted the 1st Extreme Games (became the X Games in 1996) in Rhode Island USA. The X Games provided an Olympic-like forum for a whole new generation of athletes and greater exposure for BMX. Opportunities opened up for BMX riders that they couldn't have previously imagined. Being a BMX rider became a legitimate career for many wth TV and product endorsements.

Today, BMX racing and freestyle are still a popular pursuit. In addition to the thrill, the opportunity, and possibility-- kids still just love to ride.
