history of Choy Li Fut

Choy Li Fut was formulated in 1836 by Chan Heung, who learned martial arts from his uncle, a famous Shaolin Boxer. Chan Heung named his amalgamation of Kung-Fu styles after 2 of his teachers, Li Yau-San and Choy Fok. Fut means Buddha in Cantonese, and was incorporated to the name of his new style as an acknowledgement of his uncle and the Shaolin origins of the system.

Choy Lee Fut is known as a Southern style, the art has its beginnings in both Southern and Northern China. Since the system's founder had 3 teachers, 2 from the South and 1 from the North, Chan Heung decided to combine the teachings of all 3 masters into one system. Thus, Choy Li Fut is one of only a very few kung-fu styles that contains techniques from both Southern and Northern Chinese martial arts.

Choy Li Fut is a very effective form of self defence and contains a wide variety of techniques, including short and long range punches, kicks, sweeps and takedowns,  joint locks, lethal pressure point attacks and grappling. It also practices many of the traditional Kung Fu weapons.

Although rare outside of China, Choy Li Fut is still a very popular martial arts style in mainland China today.

The fundamental principles of Choy Li Fut  ( Choi Lee Fut )

Power
Power is generated using the whole body in both "soft" and "hard" techniques. The movements are strong enough to "level a mountain," but not tight or stiff. Techniques are "soft" but not weak; the hands move like a wheel employing circular movements to block or parry an opponent's attack and at the same time counterattack.

Breathing
Inhalation conserves energy (the yin principle). Exhalation helps the release of power (the yang principle). Shouting combination with leg and hand techniques adds power to kicks and punches. Shouts also startle the mind of your opponent.

Body Positioning
The body is held straight and erect. The shoulders and limbs are loose. All movements are extended without shortening their range. Unlike other Southern Chinese styles that use only short-range techniques, Choi Lee Fut uses long and far-reaching movements.

Leg techniques
All leg techniques are fast "as a meteor shower," or a "blink of an eye." The movement of the legs should not be seen. Kicks are performed in combinations, and are combined with hand techniques.

Footwork
Footwork, based mainly on the Lee Style, is strong but agile. Switching from stance to stance is a split second affair. It is said that, "Slow walking is silent as meditation. Fast stepping is quick as a wind-cloud turning in the sky."

Hand Techniques
All long, medium, and short-range hand techniques are coordinated with stances. Both left and right handed techniques are used in defense and attack. Changing from technique to technique is smooth so that any combination can be used. The "gyong jee" fist is Choi Lee Fut's unique hand technique.
