history of iaido

Iai-Do is the ancient Japanese art of drawing the sword and cutting in a single movement. It was created for the physical and mental discipline of the Samurai warrior. The Founder of Iai-Do was the master swordsman Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu who lived around 1550 AD during the Muromachi Period. Most of the old schools of Iaido can trace their roots back to this man.

Students are taught Iai-Do techniques for use against multiple and single opponents, even against spear (yari) and armor (yoroi). Iai-Do joins together various defensive and offensive movements that teach a swordsman to receive and counter an attack from any direction.

Iaido is the way of the sword, a martial art originating in kenjutsu.

This martial art was developed as a defensive method of fighting designed to fight off surprise attacks and draw the sword faster then the attacker could.. This art results from the fact that the sword was not worn unsheathed all the time, hence having to be drawn out of the sheath as quickly as possible when needed. The basic idea of Iaido is to strike down the attacker with one stroke after discovering him.

The practice of Iaido requires a calm mind, strong concentration, and the right spiritual attitude. It is the secret of Iaido to assess a situation, strike down the attacker, do all this with a clear mind and calm spirit and return to this attitude of mind. The sword reflects the calmness of the soul.
