history of karate

shaolin temple boxing

Most Western  martial arts historians, that have researched the subject will most certainly have come across references to Bodhidharma. He is also known as "Daruma" in Japan and  this Indian Buddhist monk is often cited as the original source for all martial arts styles or at the very least, for any martial arts style that can be traced back to the fabled Shaolin Temple.

His contributions to Zen Buddhism and the martial arts and even of his very existence has been a matter of controversy among historians and martial arts students for many years.

Legend would have us believe that the evolution of karate started over a 1000 years ago, possibly as early as the 5th century BC when Bodhidharma arrived in Shaolin-si (small forest temple), China from India and taught Zen Buddhism. He also introduced a stylised group of exercises designed to strengthen the body and mind, exercises which many believe marked the beginning of the Shaolin style of temple boxing. Bodhidharma's teachings later became the basis for most of Chinese martial arts.

What grew out of the Shaolin tradition was a myriad of different karate fighting styles that evolved into the many varied schools of wushu, or kung fu as it is known today. Kung fu forms are based largely on the actions, attacks, and reactions of animals. some of these are called the tiger school, the white crane school or kung fu, the praying mantis school and the bear school.

As a mostly agricultural society, the Okinawans became skilled at unarmed combat but also added different weapons to their repertoire of fighting techniques. There was a man named Gichin Funakoshi. This man was one of many who learned the art of The Hand, or Te. As a school teacher he had hoped to find a way to introduce this art into the school system as a means of developing the physical education programs of Okinawa.

The techniques and exercises he developed for his physical education students were adaptations of the karate that he was learning secretly from karate masters who lived nearby. In the early days of modern karate, the art's popularity was l-restricted to Okinawa only but soon was being practiced all over Japan. In 1921 the Japanese Crown Prince (who later became Emperor Hirohito) saw a karate demonstration by Gichin Funakoshi and his traveling group of karate men. From there, karate spread in popularity due to the patronage of the Crown Prince.

Karate grows in many shapes and forms as other styles of karate come from Okinawa to the Japanese mainland, including  Wadoryu, Gojuryu and Shitoryu. University karate clubs were formed throughout Tokyo and Osaka. Karate has now become a standard “Japanese” activity and pastime.
