history of kempo

Like all Martial Arts, Kempo Ryu traces it's origins back to ancient China, namely the Shao-lin-ssu (Japanese: Shonin-Ji) method of boxing (Kempo). The Shao-lin-ssu system of fighting with fists (Kempo) is believed to have been invented by the Indian priest Bodhidharma, who is also known in Japan as Daruma Daishi, in the 5th or 6th century. Part of Shao-lin-ssu Kempo training involved yoga practice and light meditation, as well as the basics of punching and kicking.

No one can say for certain when the art of Kempo moved into Okinawa, however it is believed to be sometime between the years 618-906 AD during  the T'sang Dynasty. The people of the Ryu Kyu Islands did not receive the original style of Shao-lin-ssu Kempo. They combined a number of Chinese Kempo methods and added their own skills and techniques, to form the Okinawan Karate or Okinawa-te. The people of Okinawa use the word "te" instead of the Japanese word of Karate. When the martial art came to Japan from Okinawa, it was written with the meaning empty (Kara) hand ( 'te' ) - Karate.

It is thought that 'Tode' Sakugawa taught Sokon Matsumura who then passed on his knowledge to the other great names of Okinawa being Asato, Itosu, Chibana, Kyan, and many more. From these pioneers and later their student other styles such as Shotokan, Goju, Shuri and  Wado were developed.

The evolution of Kempo or Kenpo as it is sometimes called in Japan is not well documented, although it is believed that when Japan attempted to conquer China many of the returning Samurai Warriors brought back with them extensive knowledge of Kenpo which they incorporated into their own arts of Jujutsu and Aikijutsu.

In 1919 a young Hawaiian named James Mitose was sent to Kyushu in Japan to learn his ancestor's art of Kosho Ryu Kempo. After he finished his training in Japan, Mitose returned to Hawaii and in 1937 founded the "Official Self-Defense" club in Honolulu where he called his art Kenpo Jujutsu . It was here that one of his students, William Chow, studied the martial art. Some people believe that the use of the word “Karate” was simply an advertising scheme, as the term was  more well-known as a type of martial art. “Karate” simply means “empty hand”, denoting a style that does not use weapons to attack or defend. Therefore, “Kenpo Karate” translates as “ way of the fist and empty hand" To differentiate themselves from the traditional; Okinawan and Japanese Karate styles, both Chow and Mitose introduced the wearing of a black uniform (gi).  This was to represent that Kenpo was more of a "war art" than the increasingly sports-oriented Karate styles in white uniforms.
