history of Shukokai karate

Shukokai Karate is a martial arts style renowned for its hard hitting techniques and scientific approach to body kinetics.  Shukokai, which means "Way For All", is a dynamic form of Okinawan Karate and can be considered a direct descendant of its parent martial art style, Shito Ryu.

Mr. Chojiro Tani was born in Kobe, Japan in 1921 and started to study the art of Karate during Junior High School at the Gojo School of Karate. He entered Doshisha College in 1940 and continued his instruction of karate under Ken-na Mabuni. In 1948 he founded the Shukokai School of Karate in Kobe, where he taught Tani-ha Shito-Ryu. He also organized clubs at the Osaka College of Economics, Kyoto University, Kobe University Medical Schooland Tottiro University.

Sensei Tani sent three of his top students, Nambu ,Kimura and Suzuki Sensei out into the world to spread the art.

Outside of Japan, Shukokai karate started to spread with a large following in Europe. Shigeru Kimura, one of the students of Chojiro Tani then took Shukokai to the USA, while Yoshinao Nambu continued to teach in Europe.

Shukokai adds to the traditional styles of karate by blending it with the logical principles behind modern sporting dynamics.

The theories behind Shukokai are quite complex and it takes a lifetime of study to come to an understanding of the art. It is a system of combat that looks for perfection and therefore demands continuous study.
