the Korean art of self defense

Tae Kwan Do, "the way of foot and fist," is a martial art based on very old Korean methods of self-defense. Taekwondo emphasizes kicking techniques and flexibility, but hand techniques are also widely employed.

The art is a means of self-defense, recreation, physical conditioning and mental discipline, Taekwondo is recognized not just as a martial art, but also as an exciting sport with powerful punches and kicks  that are combined with continuous action, endurance, skill, and sportsmanship. This martial art has now become a major international sport. Taekwondo was an exhibition sport at the Olympic games in Seoul, Korea, in 1988, Taekwondo became a medal event at the 2000 Olympic in Sydney.

The 5 original Korean Kwans or schools were: Chung Do Kwan, Yun Moo Kwan, Chang Moo Kwan, Moo Duk Kwan (the art of Tang Soo Do) and Chi Do Kwan. These were founded in 1945 and 1946. 3 more Kwans were founded in the early 1950's - Song Moo Kwan, Ji Do Kwan and Oh Do Kwan.

After 50 years of occupation by Japan (which ended in 1945) and after the division of the country and the Korean War, Korean nationalism demanded the creation of a national martial art and in 1955 the various styles of the numerous kwans still active within the nation were combined with the exception of Moo Duk Kwan, which remained separate - therefore Tang Soo Do is still a separate art from Taekwondo today). Gen. Hong Hi Choi was mainly responsible for the creation of this new national art, which was named Tae Kwon Do to link it with Tae-Kyon (a native art). Many martial arts masters had studied Japanese arts during Korea's occupation, or had learned Chinese arts in Manchuria. these also were added to and combined with the traditional Kwans.
