The school became a community college in 1919 and was given a new name, the State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute for Negroes. Authorized to offer senior college work in 1939, the first baccalaureate degrees were conferred in 1941. The name was changed again in 1948 to Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College, and the present name, Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, was established in 1969. The University
is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools to award the baccalaureate, master's, and
doctoral degrees.
