Hendrix College
Central Institute, which was to become Hendrix College was
founded in 1876 at Altus, Arkansas, by the Reverend Isham L. Burrow.
He was a serving minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (now a part of the
United Methodist Church) during this time.
The institution was renamed to Central
Collegiate Institute in 1881 when secondary and
collegiate departments were added. The school
was purchased in 1884 by conferences of the Southern Methodist Church in
Arkansas and was renamed Hendrix College honoring Bishop Eugene R. Hendrix in 1889.
In 1890 the college was relocated to Conway, Arkansas. By the middle of the 1930s
Hendrix College was firmly established in its role as a small, undergraduate,
church-related residential, liberal arts institution.
From the mid-1950s the school slowly increased student enrollment until
it stabilized in the 1970s at just below one thousand.
The College has now added more than fifteen buildings, developed a new
master plan for growth of the campus. the school has enhanced
and revised the curriculum and added faculty in key areas. The
Institution's standing commitment to experiential education gave birth to the Hendrix Odyssey
Program in 2005. This component of the curriculum, which requires
engaged learning experiences of every Hendrix graduate, has enabled
the College to build a national reputation for
leadership in engaged learning. |
