THIS MONTHS FEATURED SCHOOL

TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY

Tuskegee University was established in 1880 by an act of the Alabama State Legislature. The school's first President, Dr. Booker T. Washington, officially opened the Normal School for Colored Teachers on July 4, 1881.

Tuskegee rose to national prominence under the leadership of its founder, Dr. Washington, who headed the institution from 1881 until his death at age 59 in 1915. During his tenure, institutional independence was gained in 1892, again through legislation, when Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute was granted authority to act independent of the state of Alabama.

Dr. Patterson also brought the Tuskegee Airmen flight training program to the Institute. The all-Black squadrons of Tuskegee Airmen were highly decorated World War II combat veterans and forerunners of the modern day Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Patterson is also credited with founding the United Negro College Fund, which to date has raised more than $1 billion for student aid. Dr. Luther H. Foster became president of Tuskegee Institute in 1953.

Tuskegee attained University status in 1985 and has since begun offering its first doctoral programs in integrative biosciences and materials science and engineering. The College of Business and Information Sciences was established and professionally accredited, and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Physical Sciences was expanded to include the only Aerospace Engineering department at an HBCU

  • Tuskegee is the best performed football team among historically Black Colleges and Universities (554 victories) and is ranked in the top 3 among NCAA Division II schools in total wins.
  • Tuskegee won its first mythical National Black College Football Championship in 1924 and the 2000 team was the first 12-0 HBCU football team since 1948.
  • Cornerback Drayton Florence became the highest football player ever drafted from Tuskegee when he was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the 2nd round in 2003. Cornerback Frank Walker was drafted by the New York Giants in the 6th round in the 2003 draft. Cornerback Roosevelt Williams was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 3rd round in 2002. Linebacker Kenneth Woodard was the 1st Tuskegee football player to play in the Super Bowl (Denver Broncos, 1987) and Anthony Mitchell was the 1st Golden Tiger to play on a Super Bowl winning team. He help his Baltimore Raven team to win a spot in the 2001 Super Bowl by returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans. Additionally, Leon Crenshaw (Green Bay Packers), Cecil Leonard (New York Jets), Arthur May (Cincinnati Bengals) and Broderick Jones (Cleveland Browns) played several years in the NFL. Through the 2003 NFL Draft, Tuskegee has had twenty-two players drafted.
  • It took seventy-five years, but quarterback Aaron James (1998-2001) broke a ninty-yard record-setting touchdown run, set by All-American running back Benjamin Stevenson in 1926 with a 91-yard touchdown run in 2001.
