The University of Arkansas, the leading campus of the University of Arkansas System, is situated on a former hilltop farm overlooking the Ozark Mountains to the south. At the College's founding in 1871, the site in Fayetteville was described as "2nd to none in the state of Arkansas."

 

the University is situated in Fayetteville, it is both the major land-grant university for Arkansas and the state university. The College came into being under the Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862, through which federal land sales provided funds for new colleges devoted to "agriculture and the mechanic arts," "scientific and classical studies," and "military tactics" for the "liberal and practical education of the industrial classes." The University's founding satisfied the provision in the Arkansas Constitution of 1868 that the General Assembly "establish and maintain a State University."

Today, the University of Arkansas campus includes more than One Hundred and thirty buildings on 345 acres and offers nearly Two hundred academic programs, more than some institutions twice its size. the college maintains a low student-to-faculty ratio (currently 17:1) that makes personal attention possible. The College encourages undergraduate research in nearly every discipline and makes higher education affordable with competitively priced tuition and generous financial aid.

The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville has a proud intercollegiate athletics history dating back to the late 19th century. It is an National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I-A college and a proud member of the Southeastern Conference. It was a founding member of the original Southwest Conference, disbanded in the early 1990s.

The School fields 8 men's and Eleven women's sports programs. In 2003-04, the University of Arkansas ranked 27th in the annual Sears/NACDA Directors' Cup competition for the country's best intercollegiate athletics program.
