The University of Montevallo is located in Shelby County, approximately thirty miles south of Birmingham. The campus is located approximately nine miles from the Shelby County Airport exit off Interstate 65. The university was founded on October 12 1896.

• Average enrollment of 3,100, with a student/faculty ratio of sixteen to one.

 

•Every year, UM enrolls about five-hundred and fifty freshmen from throughout the Southeast. The average ACT composite score for entering freshmen is twenty-three.

• About seventy percent of freshmen said UM was their 1st collegiate choice.

• Almost 1/2 of UM’s entering freshmen say the size of the college and its academic reputation are factors that led to their enrollment.

• Virtually every county in Alabama is represented by UM students. International students represent twenty-seven countries.

• More than thirty degree programs with approximately seventy-five majors

• Montevallo offers academic programs in 4 colleges: College of Arts & Sciences, College of Education, Michael E. Stephens College of Business and the College of Fine Arts

• Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1925

• Individual academic programs are nationally accredited by eleven different professional evaluating organizations.

• The University of Montevallo is a member of the prestigious Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) and is one of twenty public liberal arts colleges in the United States.

• Montevallo is believed to be the 1st legislatively designated public liberal arts college.

• The College was the 1st Alabama institution of higher learning to guarantee its teacher-education graduates.

• UM claimed the 1st State of Alabama Eminent Scholars Chair, which brings outstanding visiting scholars to the campus.

Athletics

The University of Montevallo fields ten NCAA Division II athletic teams that compete in the East Division of the Gulf South Conference: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, tennis, women’s cross-country and volleyball.

• The University is the home of the Falcons and Lady Falcons.

• Montevallo’s school colors are purple and gold.
