whittier college

Whittier College is a 4 year independent liberal arts residential institution that is distinguished by its small size, innovative interdisciplinary programs and nationally recognized liberal arts curriculum.

The College was founded  by members of the Religious Society of Friends in 1887 and was chartered by the State of California in 1901 with a student body of just 25.The school’s founders named it in honor of Quaker abolitionist  and poet John Greenleaf Whittier, who wrote of his pleasure at the honor but died in 1892 without ever having seen the college. The College continues to honor its Quaker heritage but has been a secular institution since the 1940s.

The Religious Society of Friends established the town of Whittier in 1887 and the Whittier Academy was also established in that same year later to become Whittier College.

Although the college is no longer affiliated with the Society of Friends, the university is proud of its Quaker heritage, which is evidenced in many ways, including respect for the individual, commitment to a diverse student body and faculty, freedom of conscience, and respect for human differences.

During the 1920s the College became an athletic powerhouse in California, playing teams from institutions its own size as well as universities such as USC, Cal Berkeley and UCLA .
