Located in the historic town of Mount Vernon, Iowa,
Cornell was founded in 1853 and today is an active and diverse
residential community of nearly Twelve-hundred students.
LOCATION: Mount Vernon, Iowa (population. 4,171),
featuring 3 National Historic Districts, a vibrant uptown business
community, and easy accessibility to entertainment, culture, and shopping in
Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. 4 hours from Chicago.
ENROLLMENT: Approximately Twelve-hundred women and men from
over Forty states and a dozen foreign countries. 88% live on campus. 30%
are from Iowa, with Illinois, Minnesota, Colorado, and Wisconsin filling
out the top 5.
ACADEMIC STRUCTURE: Undergraduate liberal arts college with
One-Course-At-A-Time calendar. More than Forty academic majors and
pre-professional programs and an individualized major students design to
meet specific interests and goals.
FACULTY: Faculty-student ratio is 1:12. There are Eighty-five
tenure-track faculty and 96% hold the highest degree awarded in their
fields. Students can work with faculty members on research.
CAMPUS: Ideal, wooded hilltop setting is one of only 2campuses
in the country listed entirely on the National Register of Historic
Places. There are Forty-two buildings on 129 acres. Cole Library is also
the Mount Vernon public library, making it one of only 2 such libraries
in the country.
CAMPUS LIFE: About 100 student organizations, a comprehensive
leadership program, and a volunteer services program in which 75% of
students participate. About 1/3 of students join Fifteen non-national
Greek "social and service groups." There are Forty intramural
activities. Daily events include lectures, recitals and concerts, art
openings, plays, a lyric theater production, athletic events, movies.
Freshman-only residence hall plus affinity housing, substance-free
floors, single-sex and co-ed floors and residence halls.
INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS: Cornell ranks 10th in the nation
among Division III schools with Twenty-five NCAA Postgraduate Scholars,
a scholarship for academic and athletic achievement. There are Nineteen
Division III varsity sports. Member Iowa Intercollegiate Athletics
Conference.
