university of Pennsylvania America's first university

In 1749 in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin showcased his vision of a school in a pamphlet titled Proposals for the Education of Youth in Pensilvania. Unlike other American Colonial colleges, the new institution would not focus on education for the clergy.

Instead, it would set out to prepare students for lives of business and public service. The proposed program of study would become the country's 1st modern liberal arts curriculum. The 1st classes were held in 1751.

More than Two-hundred and fifty years later, the University of Pennsylvania continues to blaze innovative trails in education. The university is home to the country's 1st medical school and a teaching hospital was added in 1874.The College is also the birthplace of technological invention. In 1946, Penn introduced ENIAC, the world's first electronic, large-scale, general-purpose digital computer

Today the University of Pennsylvania is home to a diverse undergraduate student body of nearly Ten Thousand coming from every state in the USA and all around the world. Admissions are among the most selective in the country and Penn consistently ranks among the top Ten universities in the annual United States News & World Report survey. Another Ten Thousand students are enrolled in Penn's Twelve graduate and professional schools, which are national leaders in their fields. The Wharton School is consistently one of the country's best 3 business schools. The School of Nursing is one of the 2 best in the United States. The School of Arts and Sciences, School of Medicine, Graduate School of Education, Law School, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Annenberg School for Communication all are  ranked in the top Ten schools in their fields

As of fiscal year 2006, the research community includes more than Four thousand two hundred faculty and Eight hundred and seventy postdoctoral fellows, nearly Three thousand eight hundred graduate students and Five thousand four hundred academic support staff and graduate assistants, and a research budget of $660 million.
