how basketball evolved and what

you need to play the game

who invented basketball

Today basketball hoops have changed little from the invention of the game.  There are a variety of basketball hoops on the market today.  There are hoops only attached to a backboard that can be hung anywhere, there are hoops with the entire stand attached for portable or in-ground use, and there are miniature basketball hoops for younger kids.  Some popular brands manufacturing basketball hoops today are Hydra Rib, Lifetime, Mammoth, Gared, and AAI.

Finally we come to basketball shoes.  Most often times a symbol of styles and trends, your choice in basketball shoe should be guided by comfort level.  While it is easy to fall into the desire to look good while playing, it is very important to remember that basketball is a game that requires a massive amount of movement.  This means that your feet are jumping, turning, pivoting, running, and taking part in a lot of other actions as well.  If you are not comfortable, you will not play at the level you should.  All basketball shoes must provide durability, support, stability, flexibility, and shock absorption.  Choosing a shoe also depends on your personal playing style.  For these reasons and more, you must be extremely careful and wise when choosing your basketball shoe.

First, you must look at the protection and support the show will provide.  Ankle injuries are common in basketball, so you should provide as much support possible to that problem area.  A good choice would be a pair of high-top sneakers.  They rise above the ankle, allowing less room for twists, sprains, and even breaks.  If you are a fast player, you are going to want to choose a shoe with moderate support and flexibility that still cushions.  A low-cut basketball shoe would be a good choice.  If you are more of a power player, you should choose a shoe that gives maximum cushioning and stability.  If you are an all-around player, go for a shoe that gives you moderate ankle support and cushioning that is also lightweight.  Shoes can be constructed differently as well.

The upper part of the shoe is the soft top and its job is to keep the foot held in tightly during play.  This top part can come in high-top, mid-top, or low-top, but keep in mind that around 70% of advanced players choose high-tops because they provide the most support.  Only about 10% of players chose low-tops for regular play.  The material used on basketball shoes these days are lightweight combinations, that mix leather and mesh together, allowing for stability and durability, along with flexibility and breath ability.  The outer sole of the shoe is also important.  A good outsole should be flat and moderately wide, creating a stable base for the foot.  A herringbone patter is most popular because it provides the best traction to keep you steady during quick movements.  There are shoes designed more for indoor play (like most basketball shoes), but if you are more of an outdoor player, you should choose a shoe with a more durable outsole.

Please keep in mind as well that there is a difference between men and women’s basketball shoes, and that it is best to stay within your gender specific shoe.  Men’s shoes are wider, generally too wide for a women’s foot, so they don’t offer enough support and stability.  Also, remember that your feet are bigger when they are hot, so be careful when choosing your shoe size.
