The looseness makes it easier to control the ball while the player is running, but make shots less accurate. There are different mesh pockets available that use a variety of materials such as soft mesh, duramesh, and MonsterMesh. Soft mesh is the most popular and is the easiest to maintain. Duramesh last longer than soft mesh, but is stronger, so it is harder to break-in. Finally, the MonsterMesh is the strongest of the three, consisting of a stiffer fabric that has a larger pattern of holes. There are also strict regulations on the pocket size, but keep in mind the fact that bigger is not always better. Also, the depth of the pocket is important, considering that a deeper pocket generally provides more ball control, while a shallower pocket allows for quicker shot release. Some popular brands of lacrosse sticks and heads/pockets to look for are Brine, Maverick, Warrior, Gait, STX, Shamrock, and deBeer. The lacrosse ball is also necessary to play a game of lacrosse. Historically, the lacrosse ball came in two different types. The first of these was made of wood and was burnt so that the charred parts could be scraped away and a more suitable surface was revealed. This wood ball allowed for the making of a perforated surface so that it whistled as it flew through the air. The second type of ball was made from animal hide and stuffed with hair, grass, sand, or a substance similar to these. Today, a lacrosse ball is made of hard rubber. The ball is slightly smaller than a baseball and weighs between 5 and 5 ¼ ounces. The circumference of the lacrosse ball must be at least 7 ¾ and no more than about 8 inches. It is said that when a lacrosse ball is dropped onto hardwood floor, it should bounce as high as 45 inches, but not higher than 49 inches. Good lacrosse balls to purchase are made by Brine, Voit, and Warrior.
