USA FOOTBALL SUPPORTS DIETARY SUPPLEMENT REGULATION

regulation the key to dietary products  that contain steroid precursors or ephedra.

USA Football has joined a group of the nation's leading public health, medical, and sports organizations in supporting government legislation regarding the regulation of dietary supplements that contain steroid precursors or ephedra.

In addition to USA Football, the Coalition for Anabolic Steroid Precursor and Ephedra Regulation (CASPER) includes the U.S. Olympic Committee, NFL, NCAA,  U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, American Medical Association, and other major organizations.

CASPER was founded to support The Anabolic Steroid Precursor Control and Health Education Act (H.R. 207), which was co-sponsored by Rep. John Sweeney (R-NY) and Rep. Tom Osborne (R-NE).

Steroid precursors are substances that are converted by the body into steroids which have an anabolic effect. The steroid precursors are themselves steroids. In most cases, the substances formed in the body from steroid precursors that are responsible for their advertised actions are scheduled under the Controlled Substances Act. Ephedra use in a small but significant number of otherwise healthy individuals has been associated with stroke, heart attack,  and psychoses. In specific circumstances, it has been associated with death. The increased use of these substances augments the risk that otherwise healthy individuals will have an adverse medical event.

"USA Football is pleased to support the vital efforts of CASPER," said Dave Ogrean, USA Football's executive director. "Our goal is to help make the Steroid Control Act of 2003 a reality. The health risks and dangers due to the presence of anabolic steroid precursors and ephedra in dietary supplements are a major concern for all Americans, especially our nation's youth."

USA Football, a non-profit organization, was created by the National Football League (NFL) and National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) in December of 2002. It is the first national advocacy group that represents all levels of amateur football. USA Football has been endowed by the NFL Youth Football Fund, a foundation formed by the NFL and NFLPA to provide support for organizations involved in youth and high school football. Jack Kemp, former Congressman and quarterback who led the Buffalo Bills to the 1964 and 1965 American Football League Championship, serves as chairman.
