the effects of Sports Supplements’ on Strength, Muscle Size and Performance

WHEY AND LEUCINE PROTEIN, CREATINE/CARBOHYDRATE/AMINO ACID STUDIES PRESENTED AT THE 2004 NATIONAL STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Presenters at the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) annual conference in Minneapolis unveiled several new studies than emphasized  the positive effects of sports supplements on  muscle size and strength.

Two studies completed at major universities and sponsored by General Nutrition Centers, Inc. (GNC) were presented at the conference. The Exercise Physiology Lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presented results of a study documenting the benefits of leucine and whey protein to increase muscle size and strength when used as part of a structured resistance training program. Also, the Human Performance Laboratories at the University of Memphis presented results of clinical testing of a supplement combining creatine, carbohydrates and amino acids and the positive effects on exercise performance.

“These studies further reinforce GNC’s belief that proper use of sports supplements can help athletes achieve their health and fitness goals,” said Dr. Susan Trimbo, senior vice president of scientific affairs at GNC. “GNC is proud to partner with the country’s top exercise physiology facilities to conduct clinical research focused on advanced sports nutrition to support our product development efforts.”

GNC is introducing two new Pro Performance® sports nutrition products featuring leucine and whey protein. Pro Performance® Mega Whey Extreme™ and Mega MRP Extreme™ both feature the clinically tested combination of 20 grams whey protein and 6.2 grams of leucine. Both products are expected to be available at GNC stores across the country by the end of August.

WHEY AND LEUCINE PROTEIN STUDY RESULTS
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s whey and leucine protein study showed that, when used as part of a structured resistance training program, this specific combination of leucine and whey protein can help increase muscle strength and size. The eight-week study consisted of three groups: a whey and leucine group, a placebo group and a control group. Based on leg extension muscle strength and mid-thigh cross section measurements, the study concluded that strength and muscle size increased in the group using the leucine and whey protein supplement when used as part of a structured resistance training program.

CREATINE/CARBOHYDRATE/AMINO ACID STUDY RESULTS
The Human Performance Laboratories at the University of Memphis research tested a supplement containing a combination of creatine, carbohydrates and various amino acids. The results showed that, when used during a period of stressful resistance training, athletes taking the supplement not only increased their body mass, but they also maintained their desire to continue their stressful workout. Participants taking the supplement had less of a decrease in barbell velocity and a better physiological response to the high stress resistance training ‘over-reaching’ exercise sessions.

This three-week study featured weight-trained males broken into three groups: a creatine, carbohydrate and amino acid supplement group, a placebo group and a control group. Participants in the supplement and placebo groups took their products orally following each of their 15 training sessions.

In addition, a follow-up study analyzed lab results from muscle biopsies and urine samples taken from the study participants to measure specific receptors and stress hormones. Compared to the placebo group, the supplement group showed improved physiological responses to the stress of over-reaching resistance training exercise.
