Yale Transfer Awaiting NCAA Ruling
During his freshman year at the University of Western Ontario in London, ON, Tyler Varga had a standout year, earning National Freshman of the Year honors from CIS, Canada’s version of the NCAA. Varga transferred to Yale, switched to American football, and is continuing a strong college campaign, averaging over 100 yards per game he has appeared in. But now NCAA issues have sidelined him:
While most telephone calls requesting information ended with “no comment” sources says the investigation on Varga’s status is multipronged.
“We are just awaiting a decision from the NCAA,” said Steven Conn, an associate athletics director for Yale. “We have no time frame. We thought we could have had it Friday.”
The article’s guess is that Varga’s transfer does not meet the requirements of the one-time transfer exception for football players. Football players must transfer either from the FBS to FCS or from an FCS school that offers football scholarships to one that does not, like members of the Ivy League.
That’s a decent thought because the rule does not generally allow for transfers down a level or from one level to another, just those two specific situations. But that would be something you would expect Yale to catch and the review was called “multi pronged” so it may also concern other issues like his academic certification or amateur status. Like Nic Kerdiles, hopefully more information will come to light.
