Wichita State Investigating Potential Baseball Clothing Violations
Paul Suellentrop of the Wichita Eagle:
Wichita State has hired an Overland Park law firm that specializes in NCAA rules compliance to help investigate members of the school’s baseball team receiving improper clothing and apparel benefits.
Two things stand out about this investigation. First is that the violations were discovered by a new coaching staff which started in June. Second is that everyone interviewed by Sullentrop says the former coach Gene Stephenson was a stickler for rules and none mentioned anything out of the ordinary with the team-issued apparel.
If the violations did not involve team apparel, then they must have been related to outside extra benefits, like discounts from a local business. But in that case, it seems unlikely that the new coaching staff would discover the violations, unless some record or institutional knowledge of the benefits existed.
