Tennessee’s New Nike Contract Includes Compliance Provisions
Most of the coverage of Tennessee’s new apparel deal with Nike has focused on the money, the excitement of the coaches, and the potential recruiting bump, but Patrick Brown of the Chattanooga Times Free Press noticed this provision:
There also are provisions for reductions should Tennessee’s football or basketball programs receive a television or postseason ban from the NCAA. Such a penalty from the football program would cost Tennessee half of its base pay from Nike for that year. The rate for a basketball ban is 10 percent.
If these types of provisions are not already common, expect them to become the norm as schools negotiate new apparel deals.
