San Jose Men’s Basketball Facing APR Postseason Ban
Jimmy Durkin of the San Jose Mercury News on San Jose State’s announcement that it expects Academic Progress Rate sanctions on the men’s basketball team in 2014–15:
“Last year, we were faced with a situation that needed to be dealt with in a major fashion,” athletic director Gene Bleymaier said in a release, referencing the 2013 season under George Nessman’s leadership. “The coaching staff was not retained and several players were not invited back for the 2013–14 season. Only four players returned from the 2012–13 team.
Prior to last year, San Jose State’s APR had been improving. In 2011–12, the men’s basketball team posted a 940 multiyear rate with a perfect score of 1000 for 2011–12. That means San Jose State’s 2012–13 multiyear APR will include the following single year scores:
- 2009–10: 907
- 2010–11: 933
- 2011–12: 1000
Some rough math and Bleymaier’s comments point to a very low single year score in 2012–13, likely less than 900. The Spartans will have to carry that low score for another three years, but will drop the 907 from 2009–10 next year. That should help their score rebound with with a solid performance next year.
In addition to the postseason ban and reduced practice time that must be replaced with academic work, San Jose State players who would complete their eligibility in 2014–15 may apply to transfer and play immediately without getting permission to contact other schools from San Jose State.
