DII Considers Requiring Full-Time ADs, Compliance Staff
Last week the Division II Management Council voted to sponsor a proposal which would require DII institutions to employ both a full-time athletic director and full-time compliance coordinator who do not have coaching duties. The rule is already in effect for institutions applying to become Division II members, which also includes most institutions who are applying to be NCAA members for the first time.
According to the most recent membership census, only 10% of Division II institutions have either an AD or compliance coordinator who also has coaching duties. DII schools would have until August 1, 2018 to have these positions filled without coaching duties. Institutions not in compliance by then would be placed on probation.
Also discussed but not forwarded as a proposal was the idea of adding student-athletes to the Division II Management Council, which is very similar to the new Division I Council in the proposed governance structure. In July the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will discuss how many representatives they will seek and whether those representatives should have a vote as well.
