ENMU Sifting Through NCAA Eligibility Problems
Division II Eastern New Mexico University expects almost all of its sports to suffer some form of NCAA punishment for a wide-ranging violation affecting academic eligibility:
The issues were not the fault of students and the university reported them to the NCAA after problems were discovered. The problems range from lack of signatures on required forms to a lack of degree plans or needed credit-hours to play sports.
Those violations, aside from the credit-hour requirements, all appear to be the fault of record-keeping procedures and monitoring controls. In another report, the school’s president said the person in charge of compliance at the time of the violations is no longer with the school.
These types of violations are common at the Division II level, as well as schools who recently moved up to Division I. Despite the minor nature of the individual violations, these cases often include a charge of lack of institutional control due to the number of student-athletes involved and the lack of good monitoring systems.
