FIU’s Taylor Unlikely to be Reinstated for Draft Violation
ESPN’s Andy Katz:
Florida International guard Raymond Taylor was pulled from the team’s game against Bethune-Cookman on Thursday to allow the school to further investigate whether he’s eligible after withdrawing from the 2012 NBA draft after the NCAA deadline of April 10.
According to NBA press releases, Taylor withdrew from the draft sometime between May 3 and June 10 of this year. That would put him in violation of the NCAA’s “testing the waters” rule which requires basketball student-athletes to withdraw from the NBA draft by the start of the regular NLI signing period to retain their eligibility.
FIU is investigating Taylor’s situation in the hopes of having him reinstated but that will be difficult. The Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement has set the guidelines for draft cases under the new rules with a starting point of eligibility not reinstated. It will take compelling mitigation for Taylor to be reinstated and even then a length suspension should be expected.
