Augustana College – Illinois-Athletic Scholarships
Augustana College – Illinois is a private, Lutheran-affiliated liberal arts institution. Within its well-maintained 115-acre campus in Rock Island are old and new buildings housing the classrooms, and 35 science/research laboratories with high-tech scientific equipment. There is an outdoor athletic complex, football, softball and practice fields, tennis courts, P.E center, recreation center, visual and performing arts centers, library, research center, parks and study spots, and student residences.
The highly selective College offers 60 academic programs (includes nine pre-professional and eight interdisciplinary) to its more than 2,500 friendly students, 15% are students of color. There are 188 competent full-time faculty members, 91% of whom are PhD or terminal degree holders, and 105 part-time and adjunct colleagues. Faculty to student ratio is 1: 12, with 61% of classes having fewer than 20 students.
Augustana is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the Illinois State Board of Education. US News ranked Augustana #100 NationalLiberal Arts Colleges 2014. In 2013 Forbes ranked Augustana #242 out of 600 top schools.
Athletics Department of Augustana College – Illinois
The Athletics Department of Augustana College – Illinois’ sports program focuses on developing their student-athletes values such as teamwork, respect, dignity, diversity, accountability and communication. Through competitive sports and with the guidance of their highly competent coaches, students are able to easily build their confidence and achieve a sense of pride and team unity that will serve them well not only in competitions but in achieving their life goals as well.
The department encourages students to participate in sports activities and to join the varsity teams. It offers the opportunity for both men and women to excel in different sports. There are currently nine varsity sports for men and eight for women; intramural and club sports also help the students in honing their talents and abilities. Augustana does not aim to stand out in just one or two sports, but strives to raise the bar in all sports as much as its available resources would allow.
Athletics Programs of Augustana College – Illinois
Forty percent of male and 16% of female students of Augustana College – Illinois play varsity sports while the majority plays in the intramural and club sports. The men’s varsity sports program covers basketball, baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, lacrosse, swimming and diving, cross-country, track and field, and wrestling. Women’s varsity sports program, on the other hand, consists of softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, golf, swimming and diving, track and field, and cross-country.
Augustana competes in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), one of the country’s best leagues in NCAA Division III. Tournaments are always eagerly awaited and enthusiastically supported by fellow students.
Official Sports Team: Augustana Vikings
Winning championships is an old-age tradition with the Augustana Vikings. The Vikings have won countless Championships in almost all of the men’s and women’s varsity sports in which the team competed in the CCIW, AIAW, NAIA, MWLC and NCAA III tournaments since 1947.
The Vikings football team won the NCAA Division III national championships four years in a row, from 1983-1986, under Coach Bob Reade whose 87% overall winning percentage is the second highest on the all-time list.
Guide to Athletic Scholarships for Augustana College – Illinois
As provided for in the NCAA bylaws, Division III schools like Augustana College – Illinois may not grant athletic scholarships. Although not giving to any particular student-athlete, the Tribe of Vikings Fund’s endowed scholarships from at least 225 donor families, alumni and friends have been supporting some 700 student-athletes and coaches of the school’s Athletics Department through enhancements in the facilities, among others, and thereby contributing to the success of student-athletes in collegiate athletic competitions.
Need and merit-based financial aid packages and loan grants are made available to everyone and student-athletes are subject to the same standards for admissions and financial assistance as the rest of the student body.
Augustana awarded financial aid in varying amounts to 100% of its students in 2012; average grant covers more than 52% of tuition. The aid came in the form of scholarships, grants and loans.
