Bowling Green State University is a public higher-education institution located in Bowling Green, Ohio near Toledo. It also has a satellite campus, BGSU Firelands, in Huron, Ohio. Bowling Green State University offers varsity sports, intramural, club sports and fitness opportunities for its students. The athletics department also has extensive student services to ensure academic success among its student-athletes such as academic monitoring and one-on-one tutoring, including tutorial services across all subject areas.
Awards and honors recognition are also presented to student-athletes who show significant improvement in academics.
Bowling Green State University’s athletic department is based in the Sebo Athletic Center, which also includes the athletic training facility and weight room. Other facilities include the Doyt L. Perry Stadium, ice arena, Stroh Center for basketball and volleyball, and the Warren E. Steller Field for baseball.
Athletic Programs at Bowling Green State University
Bowling Green has a total of 18 varsity teams: men’s baseball, cross country, football, basketball, ice hockey and soccer, and women’s basketball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, tennis, softball, cross country, track and field and volleyball. Over 400 student-athletes participate on these teams. The athletics department also offers intramural sports such as golf singles, flag football, ultimate Frisbee, team handball and more. There are over 24 club sports offered such as curling, bowling, swimming and soccer. In addition, personal training and fitness classes in yoga, Zumba, turbo kick and more are offered.
Official Sports Team: Falcons
The Falcons are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and compete in the Mid-American Conference and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The team mascots are Freddie and Frieda Falcon. The Falcons play Division 1 FBS football, making Bowling Green one of only 15 universities nationwide to play this level of football. The women’s basketball team is among the most successful, winning three conference championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Guide to Athletic Scholarships for Bowling Green State University
Bowling Green State University awards over $30 million annually in scholarships and grants to deserving students. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, merit, extracurricular activities, or field of study. Scholarships range in value from $300 to full tuition and fees. Freshmen, transfer students and current students are all able to apply for scholarships at Bowling Green. In addition, certain scholarships are awarded by individual departments. The Freshmen Academic Scholarship valued anywhere from $1,000 to $8,000 is a merit scholarship that looks at SAT / ACT scores. In addition, out-of-state students are able to apply for the BG Success Scholarship valued at over $3,500. Need-based scholarships are applied for through the Financial Aid Office and vary in value.
