Founded in 1919 at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia, Apprentice School earns a unique and foremost place when it comes to apprenticeship programs in the educational system in the nation. The school offers four and five-year apprenticeships in nineteen shipbuilding areas of specialization and seven advanced programs of study and is accredited through the Council on Occupational Education and is a Virginia Apprentice Council registered. The athletics department of Apprentice School – Newport News Shipbuilding caters to the physical well being of all the students including athletes and non-athletes. Believing that continuous improvement of facilities is a main contributor to the success of their programs, Apprentice School built a modern, state-of-the-art athletic center, the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Activities Center and is also known as the Apprentice Athletics Center. Regarded as the focal point for all of the school’s athletic programs, it contains a basketball court, wrestling room, adequately equipped fitness and strength training facilities, showers, lockers, and administrative offices. The center has outdoor lighting suited for evening football activities on a field that is known to be one of the best playing surfaces of the state.
