The athletics department of Appalachian State University aims at making students, faculty and staff healthy and fit to fulfill the demands of their everyday activities in school and in their homes. ASU supports intramural sports which are fun, challenging and competitively healthy; recreation & wellness through a fully equipped recreation center that has modern equipments from free weights to treadmills; outdoor activities that schedules trips to get students up and about exploring nature and the world; and sport clubs that give students a chance to play the sport they love in college.

The athletic programs of Armstrong State University are concentrated on preparing their sports teams to be competitive in intercollegiate tournaments they participate in. With the head coaches forming and building teams in soccer, volleyball, cross country, women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s golf, baseball, softball, men’s tennis, and women’s tennis, support for the teams is complete and unwavering. Armstrong Atlantic State is proud to be a part of the premiere National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II collegiate athletic programs in the nation and as a strong contingent in the Peach Belt Conference.

The Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State University are role models for their student-fans and these athletes are considered as champions in the field and in the classroom. With their dedication and perseverance it not surprising that these athletes achieved honors in sports that include 11 National Champions, 80 Peach Belt Conference Championships, 104 NCAA Championship appearances, 248 All-Americans, 2012 & 2013 PBC Commissioner’s Cup winner as the top athletic department in the Peach Belt. In the academic front, they were awarded 2006, 2007 and 2013 Peach Belt Conference Presidential Academic Awards. The student-athletes have reached an almost 65 percent 3. 0 GPA and 32 of them had a 4. 0 GPA in 2012-2013. A best record 88 students from the varsity team were named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll. 22 Pirates also earned the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award for 2011-12.

Armstrong Atlantic State University pools its resources with the help of individuals and organizations in order to help a maximum number of students obtain a college degree. The school’s Pirate Athletic Association actively raises funds to support athletic scholarships, equipment, travel, uniforms, facilities, recruitment, and other needs. Together with established athletic scholarships like the B. J. Ford Endowed Scholarship, which benefits women athletes, incoming high caliber freshman student-athletes are attracted to try out for the varsity team. Financial aid is not only limited to athletes as there other scholarships, grants and loan programs that the students can take advantage of. The opportunities for scholarships are numerous that they have to be classified into three groups: Armstrong Scholarships, Other Scholarships and Outside Scholarships.
