How do I get recruited?
Proactively contacting a coach to introduce yourself is the most important part of the recruiting process. Start by creating a list of schools you’re interested in. Research whether or not those schools have the sport you want to play.
Once you have an initial list set up you can start focusing on putting together a profile to send to coaches. Creating a great resume and introductory cover letter is extremely important to the recruiting process because most of the time it is the first contact you will have with a coach.
For most team sports it is vital that you have a great recruiting video. Uploading your highlight film to a video hosting site such as YouTube gives coaches an easy way to access your video. Make sure to include the link to your video in your profile.
If you don’t hear back from a coach after you email him a resume or profile, it’s imperative you send them a follow-up email. After about a week you should send a coach a follow up email notifying them you have sent them your profile. If there is no response after a few more days try giving them a phone call.
Once you have made contact with coaches you have entered the most important step of the recruiting process: communicating with coaches. At this point you should communicate with coaches to get to know them and vice versa.
Getting to know coaches and sharing information about yourself will help determine if you are a good fit for a particular program, which will ultimately lead you to scholarship offers.
